How to introduce more and better programming software in schoolsSome of the best programming tools are free of charge (eg. Scratch, J2Code, Kodu) so cost should not be an issue; other products have relatively low cost (2Simple's 2Code). Many are web-based so can be used by children at home as well as at school. Most do not demand particularly powerful computer equipment and will happily run on older computers (except Kodu, perhaps).
At KS2, introduce control to add a practical dimension to programming; products such as Flowol 4 and Data Harvest Go Control make use of flowcharts for system design; Lego offers a Scratch-style programming language and a construction kit (including a motor and sensors etc) so that programs can be written to control models built with the kit.
