How to help teachers to become confident and competent programmers Start with activities which most teachers will already be comfortable with – use of programmable robots like Bee Bot or Pixie for example; most primary teachers will already be familiar with the basics of the Logo language through their use of these devices so can easily move onto simple Logo-based programming tools (eg. the Daisy The Dinosaur app) Focus on algorithms to develop computational thinking – this does not have to involve the use of computers at all in the early stages If some teachers are confident computer users with an interest in programming, they could be given opportunities to work with other teachers to develop their skillseven if none of the teachers are keen on computers, there will be some children with exceptional skills which they will be keen to share: many schools have established very effective digital leader schemes to support children and teachers In order to help teachers to get used to programming with the children, use a product which combines an effective programming tool with a range of supporting materials such as training videos, practical activities and lesson plans. J2Code from J2E and 2Code from 2Simple are good examples of new products which allow children to learn at their own pace relatively independent of the teacher. This is not a long-term solution (what happens when children reach the end of the scheme?) but it may be a good way to get started Provide training for teachers to learn how to use Scratch so that they develop the confidence and ability to introduce this language to their pupils
