The National Curriculum Subject Content at KS2 states, "Pupils should be taught to....select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information."
Problem can be that the school may not have a 'range of digital devices' - in fact most schools struggle to find the resources to keep just one type of device up to date.
We have been experimenting with ways to 'refresh' netbooks by installing Linux. We have found that Lubuntu (Ubuntu Light) is very easy to install and includes a range of software that pupils can experiment with. In fact many Year 5 and 6 pupils could do it (ideal job for digital leaders). The only rider is that you may need to get your technical support to install anti-virus and links to your server before they can be used widely.
If you use cloud based software such as j2e then the links to the server are largely irrelevant.
