It is advantageous for Scratch users to have a Scratch account. Then they can work at home as well as at school and share projects. However as you need an email address to create an account most schools see this as an obstacle. However thanks to Wendy Washbrook of Springdale First School we have discovered a solution.
Unusually the Scratch website allows multiple users to have the SAME email address.
So set up an email account just for Scratch e.g. scratch@schoolname.la.sch.uk
The only time the email account will be needed is if pupils forget their password.
Then either get the pupils to create their own accounts using that email address (they don't need to know the password) and tell you their username and password, or create the accounts for them. Unfortunately there is not a way to create multiple accounts with a csv file.
Once the accounts have been created pupils can save their work 'in the cloud' and can work at home as well as at school.
If you have a j2e accounts they can also add their Scratch username to their j2e settings and their files will appear in j2e. They can then share their files with other pupils, the class or the whole school and add their Scratch files to j2e pages using the 'add to j2e' menu option.
It is advisable to also create a school Scratch account. Then you can setup studios for each class and pupils should be able to submit their work into their class studio.

We have now setup detailed instructions for teachers and pupils on setting up Scratch accounts.
It can be done slightly more simply but this method seems best to simplify pupils sharing projects with teachers and other members of their class.
It also enables teachers to provide pupils with projects that they can remix.
